Reading
How we celebrate and practise great reading for success in school
Reading is key to your child’s success
At Reach Academy Hanworth Park, we believe that reading is the key to your child’s future success. Research shows that pupils who read regularly go on to achieve better exam results, have more choices in life and even feel happier. Pupils in all year groups should be reading for at least 30 minutes per day.
Reading expectations
All pupils at Reach Academy Hanworth Park are expected to read widely outside of the school day. Our expectation is that pupils are reading three things at any given time:
| Reading Scheme | Book of choice | Non-fiction book |
|---|---|---|
| A specified fiction book which we will provide you with. Please see more about our reading scheme below. Year 7 Reading Scheme Year 8 Reading Scheme | A book your child chooses independently This can include books they have already read, graphic novels or books aimed at younger children. Recommended Reading for Year 7 Recommended Reading for Year 8 | Some kind of non-fiction text which could include a book, newspaper or magazine. See our Recommended Reading lists for a range of great options. |
Supporting your child with reading at home
Children are more likely to read and enjoy reading if their parents/carers show them that reading is important.
You can help them do this in the following ways:
- Help your child get into a reading routine
- Ask your child to read part of the book aloud to you
- Ask your child the discussion questions for each chapter and show interest in their answers
- Encourage your child to complete the competition task at the end of each book
- Read part of the book aloud to your child
Your child will take part in a quiz about the books in our reading scheme each week. You can help your child prepare for this by asking them the discussion questions found in the family resource which will be emailed to you at the start of each term.
