Our curriculum
We are proud of our intentional curriculum and careful planning.

Our intentional and carefully planned curriculum drives progress to excellent outcomes through establishing a powerful knowledge base and a life-long love of learning.
As an all-through school, Reach Academy Hanworth Park’s curriculum is underpinned by the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are required to achieve academic excellence in each subject at A Level and beyond. Subject leaders and teachers plan backwards from this point.
This ensures that pupils in each phase receive a rigorous, coherent and intelligently sequenced curriculum, which builds on what has come before. Based on our successful model at Reach Academy Feltham, the curriculum at Reach Academy Hanworth Park is grounded in the strongest available evidence about how pupils learn and retain knowledge in the long term – focusing in particular on research from cognitive science.

“We want our pupils to love learning, create lifelong memories and be taught excellent lessons every day.”
— Louis Everett, co-headteacher

Phases
Pupils at Reach Academy Hanworth Park are organised into ‘phases’, as outlined below:
- Phase 1: Reception to Year 2
- Phase 2: Years 3-5
- Phase 3: Years 6-8
- Phase 4: Years 9-11
- Phase 5: Years 12-13
Phases refer to the educational and physical organisation of pupils as each floor of the school building will ‘house’ a phase. This ensures that for much of the school day, pupils spend their time learning and socialising with pupils of a similar age, creating a more graduated progression through the school.

EYFS
At Reach Schools, the children in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) are independent and inquisitive learners. Reach Academy Hanworth Park provides children with the best possible start to their education, by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to thrive in later education and beyond.
Building Relationships
EYFS at Reach Academy Hanworth Park is founded on relationships with the child, the family and the rest of the school. We balance time in provision with direct instruction, understanding that each child will need different mixes of this to do their best.
Every child is unique
Every child is unique and their strengths and areas for development are supported and developed with a long term aspirational pathway in mind. Our staff are highly skilled and have a depth of knowledge of child development that drives all the work that we do. We know each child as an individual, helping to drive progress through play, direct instruction and small group work.
Staff receive specific training, which enables them to be highly effective both during carpet sessions and free flow. We know that in the EYFS, we lay important foundations and expectations for pupils and parents about our school. We expect all our pupils to attend school because we know that it is only through attending school that they will benefit most from their early years education.
The EYFS curriculum primarily promotes the development of children in the key areas of learning. These are:
- Communication and language
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Physical development
The development of these skills underpins the EYFS curriculum and are taught through a combination of modelling, high quality interactions and a carefully planned curriculum. The curriculum contains two strands: the Knowledge strand and the Skills strand. Throughout Reception, Reach Schools ensure that the EYFS curriculum is delivered through a combination of age-appropriate carpet sessions, carefully planned provision and close work and communication with parents. We believe that a balance between direct instruction and play is key to enable the development of the whole child.
As the children progress through the EYFS, their day becomes more structured. This structure provides opportunities to enable them to practise skills and embed knowledge in order to ensure a smooth transition into Key Stage One.
